I am not a traditionalist.
Often, both in real life and online, I find myself in conversations with people who appeal to tradition as a reason to depart from God’s Word. While I have nothing against traditions per se, I am violently opposed to setting any man-made tradition above the Word of God. It is God’s Word–and not tradition–that constitutes sanctifying truth.
Jesus also had a problem with tradition taking the place of God’s commandments.
The Pharisees and the scribes asked Him, “Why do Your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat their bread with impure hands?” And He said to them, “Rightly did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written:
‘THIS PEOPLE HONORS ME WITH THEIR LIPS,
BUT THEIR HEART IS FAR AWAY FROM ME.
BUT IN VAIN DO THEY WORSHIP ME,
TEACHING AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’
Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men.” He was also saying to them, “You are experts at setting aside the commandment of God in order to keep your tradition. For Moses said, ‘HONOR YOUR FATHER AND YOUR MOTHER’; and, ‘HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER, IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH’; but you say, ‘If a man says to his father or his mother, whatever I have that would help you is Corban (that is to say, given to God),’ you no longer permit him to do anything for his father or his mother; thus invalidating the word of God by your tradition which you have handed down; and you do many things such as that.” —Mark 7:5-13
Look, I understand that many people don’t like what the Bible has to say. I realize that many so-called Christians advise others to avoid those of us who actually believe the Bible. But we know that those who disagree with the Law and Testimony have no light in them. We must see to it that the light that is in us is not darkness, because darkness cannot comprehend light. Those who do evil love darkness, because it masks their deeds. It is only those who practice truth that come to the light, that their deeds may be manifest.
Come to the light. Leave the darkness. Subjugate the tradition of man to the Word of God.
Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.” —John 14:23
