In the discussion on one of Donal Graeme’s latest posts, an idea has come up that I have seen a few times in various comment threads. Namely, that there is a plethora of young, fit, feminine, devout, virginal women who are actively pursuing marriage, but no men are interested in them. Now, I will admit from the get-go that I have a very hard time believing such a condition exists. It simply does not match my experience. As I’ve mentioned previously, most of the women I run into are far more interested in having a wedding than in being married. (Bring up “courthouse weddings” around a group of single young women, and watch the reaction.) The women I have known who wanted a marriage found one very quickly. (Even those who did not have all the aforementioned attributes)
So, naturally, when I hear someone saying that there is this large pool of young, fit, feminine, devout, virginal women who are actively pursuing marriage but can’t get any interest from men, I’m a bit skeptical. I’ve had a number of male friends say that if those characteristics were guaranteed by someone they trusted, they would be willing to consider going into a marriage without ever meeting the woman. It leads me to wonder if the people telling me about this condition are defining terms radically different than I am. After all, Dove has had a campaign to convince women that fat girls are fit for a while now–despite the recent discovery that female overweight and obesity in the US has been dramatically UNDER-estimated, with almost half of women categorized as non-obese found to be actually obese when body fat is measured. Apparently, some people even believe that short hair is feminine (Pro tip: It’s not). And, as I said above, all too often those who say they are interested in marriage are really only interested in having a wedding.
Differing definitions of terms may be one of the reasons that my experience does not mesh with these claims of multitudes of young, fit, feminine, devout, virginal women actively searching for marriage. Honestly though, I’d like to believe that such a group does exist, despite it seeming downright Utopian to imagine such a thing. I personally know a number of men in a number of different states that are also finding such a creature to be as elusive as a mirage, but maybe women like this exist somewhere. If they do indeed exist, I certainly know a number of men who would be interested in meeting such a woman. Therefore, I propose that the bloggers that have knowledge of these women bridge the gap. It takes only a few minutes of reading on many of the blogs in the Christian men’s sphere to come across bucketloads of men looking for such a woman. If you are also in contact with a large number of such women who are looking for a man, perhaps you could consider putting the two of them in contact. It seems like a move that both sides would appreciate.
